What TPIN Means: CDSL TPIN Explained!

Technology is evolving. You can see innovation being integrated in every sector, and the online stock market is no exception.

Gone are the days when you needed to visit your broker in person and grant permission to place an order on your behalf.

This process has become easy with demat accounts’ integration with CDSL TPIN. But what CDSL TPIN means, and how does it work? Let’s find out.

What is CDSL TPIN?

CDSL TPIN is a security feature that protects investors’ demat accounts from unauthorized access or misuse. It is a one-time pin that CDSL sends to the investor’s mobile number whenever they want to sell stocks. It ensures that only the investor can validate their transactions.

CDSL means Central Depository Services Limited. It is an Indian institution that stores securities digitally for stock market players. It helps them trade securities online securely and efficiently.

TPIN means Transaction Personal Identification Number. Investors need to enter a six-digit code to let their broker sell stocks from their demat account. It is a way of confirming their identity and consent online.

A Step-by-Step Guide for CDSL TPIN Generation

Here is the step guide to how to generate TPIN:

  • Click here to visit the CDSL portal.
  • Tap ‘E-DIS’ section
  • Tap on ‘Click here to generate TPIN for eDIS transaction.’ This option is displayed at the bottom of the page.
  • Share a 16-digit Beneficiary Owner Identification Number (BOID).
  • Tap on the ‘Next’ button.
  • Share the OTP you received on the contact number registered with the CDSL.
  • You will receive your TPIN in your email after successful verification.

When Do You Require AuthoriZation with TPIN?

You require authorization with TPIN whenever you want to sell the shares held in your demat account. The broker needs your permission to debit and transfer the shares to the buyer’s account.

A pre-authorization option is available for selling shares at the beginning of each trading day. You can also place sell orders individually after sharing the TPIN and OTP on the website or the app.

Each authorization is valid for a maximum of one day. After expiry, you again need to approve the authorization. Earlier, the validity duration of each verification was 90 days.

For example, if you verify the authorization at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, it will remain valid till 3:30 pm on the next trading day, which is Thursday. However, if you validate the authorization on Friday after 3:30, it will remain valid until Monday market closing hours, the next trading day.

How Does CDSL TPIN Authorization Work?

Suppose you have 100 shares of Reliance Industries Ltd. in your demat account with CDSL, and you want to sell 50 shares on a particular day. You can follow these steps to authorize the broker using TPIN:
